Scary Mommy: Not Your Mom's Mag
1
Background
Scary Mommy lives to sing about the unvarnished truths of motherhood. Built for the TikTok generation, its new design subverts 1950s-era wholesomeness to deliver bawdy, uproarious, and raw stories for mothers of all stripes.
2
Strategy
The site design rejects the now standard-issue neutral palettes and orderly grids in favor of asymmetry, playful use of vintage signage, and gameshow imagery. The “Wheel of Feels,” feature transforms a standard accordion menu into a playful and whimsical way to explore content—you never know what you’re going to get, but something tasty, to be sure.
Strong fonts stand bold against joyful colors as users seamlessly navigate through different curated sections on the site, from news to all things entertainment.
3
Execution
As part of Code and Theory’s highly extensible card system, Scary Mommy’s refresh demonstrates how common content components combined with a radical brand identity can deliver a highly differentiated experience, ultimately encouraging and championing user adoption.
